Rubin pointed out that from Russia’s perspective, the visit was highly beneficial, as India extended honors to Putin that are not easily found elsewhere. He questioned the long-term effectiveness of the agreements made during this visit, pondering whether they stem from genuine mutual interests or are instead reactions to Trump’s treatment of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Additionally, Rubin criticized the U.S. for its hypocrisy in lecturing India about its purchase of discounted oil from Russia, especially since the U.S. engages in trade with Moscow as well. He emphasized that India, soon to become the world’s third-largest economy, must prioritize its energy needs. Rubin argued that Americans often overlook the fact that Modi was elected to represent Indian interests, which should be respected in the context of international relations.
